CSX’s Pittsburgh & Lake Erie heritage locomotive basks in the sun outside the railroad’s paint shop in Waycross, Ga. CSX

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The CSX heritage locomotive fleet has grown to 15 with the addition of a locomotive honoring the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie.

CSX CEO Joe Hinrichs released the first photos of the unit, No. 1875, on LinkedIn this afternoon.

“Another great job by our ONE CSX team in Waycross, GA. Founded in 1875 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA – the P&LE was know as the ‘Little Giant’ since it moved so much coal over a small area serving the steel mills in Pennsylvania over to Ohio. We love celebrating our 197-year history as ONE CSX team. Enjoy everyone,” Hinrichs wrote.

The P&LE locomotive joins 14 other railroads represented in the program, including Family Lines; Pere Marquette; Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac; Baltimore & Ohio; Chessie System; Seaboard System; Conrail; Chesapeake & Ohio; Louisville & Nashville; Atlantic Coast Line; New York Central; Monon; Western Maryland; and Seaboard Coast Line.

  1. Yes, very nice gesture by CSX to roll-out this Pittsburgh & Lake Erie “Heritage” locomotive. Very sharp paint-scheme !

(And dare I saw much sharper than the P&LE GE U-28b locomotives in their declining years…?)

  2. I really love this heritage color scheme program. I remember all of them from the days of my youth. I agree that they should do the New Haven, Seaboard and perhaps the Boston and Maine since they run on parts of those railroads.

    1. There have been so many mergers …. now CSX heritage includes Boston and Maine Corporation. Where does it end? I was only kidding (earlier today) about New Haven as a CSX predecessor, therefore a heritage locomotive. (Because I’m a New Haven fan and a native of the territory.) B+M Corporation becomes Guilford Transportation becomes Springfield Terminal becomes Pan Am becomes CSX. How many Class One’s did we used to have? A couple of hundred I guess. That’s a lot of heritage locomotives to paint.

  3. Beautiful job CSX. In answer to above question about the Pennsylvania Railroad, I would say Norfolk Southern, since they have Juniata shops in Altoona.

    1. I have a question: How about the New York New Haven and Hartford? CSX runs over ex-New Haven track from Framingham to Mansfield to Attleboro to Taunton, down to the Massachusetts South Coast, and up to Braintree.

The New Haven has been cut up into so many pieces (freight railroad pieces and passenger train pieces) that even TRAINS MAGAZINE readers seem not to grasp this fallen flag.

    2. NJ Transit has a Pennsylvania Railroad heritage locomotive. Amtrak had GG1 4935 repainted in its original PRR scheme.

  4. Yes CSX you are covering all the heritage railroads, BUT you are still missing Seaboard Airline Railway, when oh when will ya’ll make that unit???, but thanks for doing the others none the less.

  5. I like the *near* full length yellow handrail, a subtle nod to the P&LE power that inspired this heritage scheme.
