GARY, Ind. — Two passengers were injured when a Chicago-bound South Shore Line commuter train hit a dump truck reportedly stalled on the tracks in Gary this morning (Monday, June 10), the Chicago Tribune reports.
The collision occurred about 7:45 a.m. at the Rutledge Street crossing, west of the Gary Metro station. The driver of the truck, which was not loaded, had exited the truck before it was hit. Images from the scene show one of the commuter operator’s Nippon Sharyo single-level trainsets was involved.
Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District President Mike Noland said at the scene that the collision occurred at a location where the train would have been traveling about 60 mph. About 100 passengers were onboard at the time; Noland said 80 were accommodated on the next inbound train, while the remainder were put on an outbound train to the Gary Metro station, where they were bused to Chicago.
