BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The National Museum of Industrial History will offer a day-long, rare-mileage trip to Vosburg Tunnel on the Reading & Northern Railroad, using two R&N Budd Rail Diesel Cars, on Wednesday, July 31.
The 3,900-foot former Lehigh Valley Railroad tunnel north of Tunkhannock, Pa., was completed in 1886. The trip, the 2024 Anthracite Railroad Ramble, will depart from R&N’s new station in Nesquehoning, Pa., and will include a tour of the R&N Nesquehoning campus and photo run-bys at various locations. Departure time will be 9 a.m.
Tickets, sold on a first-come, first-served basis, are available here. Sales end one week before the trip. Guests can bring their own lunch or pre-purchase a box lunch. Light snacks and drinks will also be available on the train on a cash basis.
“We are grateful to work with the Reading & Northern Railroad on our annual Anthracite Railroad Ramble,” museum historian Mike Piersa said. “The journey, destinations, and company aboard will make for a truly unique and memorable experience. Ticket sales will have a lasting impact as the funds raised will go a long way in supporting the Museum’s ongoing mission.” More about the museum is available here.
There will be no assigned seating, and no ticket sales the day of the trip. All children must have a ticket regardless of age. The railroad reserves the right to substitute equipment as conditions require.
Just rode to Tunkhannock behind 2102 last month, great ride. Can’t see spending the money for an extra 2 or 3 more rare miles.
Why only to the Vosburg tunnel and not through it to the Charmin plant at Mehoopany which marks the north end of the Reading & Northern? Rare mileage collectors like to get all of a line, not most of it.
Expense of safety certification through the tunnel for passenger service, perhaps?
