WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. — Canadian Pacific’s business train passes through the scenic Wisconsin Dells area in south central Wisconsin this week. The train is just west of Kilbourn siding on CP’s Tomah Subdivision and is passing high above the Wisconsin River. The train is making a round trip from Calgary, Alberta, to Kansas City, Mo., and is seen on its way towards Kansas City.

The locomotive consist is comprised of three FP9As, Nos. 1401, 4106, and 4107 and F9B No. 1900. The two lead locomotives will be set out at Moravia, Iowa, for movement to Relco in Albia, Iowa. FP9A No. 1401 will receive minor mechanical work and No. 1900 will be rebuilt.

  1. As a Canadian I’m ashamed and angry that CP seems to do all its maintenance and rebuilding in the USA. That is not what Sir John Macdonald intended when his government sponsored, and heavily subsidized, the building of the railway.

  2. For a few moments I hear what sounds like the exhaust of a steam loco but one does not appear. I can only assume that those F units are very sick and in dire need of repair. Speaking of steam, now that that damn Hunter Harrison is gone, where is 2816?, and why isn’t it out on the road? Steam is still the best public relations tool any railroad can have in its arsenal.

  3. Landon, the only way that the CP can access Kansas City directly is via its line from Chicago to Kansas City, which indeed passes through Southeastern Iowa. What is more interesting to me is why they are going to KC…perhaps for discussions with KCS??

  4. At :37 I hear something that sounds like rapid steam locomotive exhaust, then the F’s appear. I never clearly hear a diesel sound. Interesting…….

  5. Wisconsin Dells is not on the way from Calgary to either Monrovia or Kansas City. Why are they on this line?

  6. The pictured location is one of several the Milw. Rd. used for Hiawatha “Super Dome” publicity shots at the Dells. Kilbourn siding is a remnant of the former double track, installed in the early 20th century when the Milwaukee undertook a major realignment from, basically, Milwaukee to LaCrosse to facilitate 100+MPH operation. One can ride part of the original alignment dating from the mid-1800’s at the Dells on the Riverside & Great Northern Rwy.
