KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Union Pacific has started construction on a new intermodal terminal in Kansas City, expected to open in mid-2025, the railroad announced.
The Kansas City Intermodal Terminal, located west of downtown Kansas City, Mo., will be the fourth such facility UP has built in the past few years, and will offer more capacity than UP’s existing Kansas City facility. It will serve both domestic and international shipments of items including grain, consumer goods, refrigerated products, and pet foods.
“We are excited to offer shippers and receivers a centralized location to meet growing shipping demands in the Midwest,” UP’s Kenny Rocker, executive vice president-marketing and sales, said on the railroad website. “KCIT will offer shippers convenient and cost-effective access to our 32,000-mile network, with the ability to reach Mexico, Canada and overseas markets.”
The construction in Kansas City follows the opening of a new intermodal facility earlier this year in Phoenix [see “Union Pacific opens …,” Trains News Wire, Feb. 8, 2024]. That terminal followed the opening of “pop-up” facilities at West Colton, Calif., and in the Twin Cities, meant to test the market before building larger permanent terminals.
