The ScaleTrains N scale EMD SD40T-2 diesel locomotive recently visited our Milwaukee, Racine & Troy State Line Route. Join Model Railroader Senior Editor Cody Grivno as he provides a short history of the tunnel motor locomotive and Union Pacific 8803; highlights the many prototype-specific details on the Rivet Counter line model; and demonstrates the sound and light functions on our review sample, which is equipped with an ESU LokSound V5 decoder. The video concludes with UP 8803 leading a short freight train over the Myrt.

In addition to Union Pacific (88” and 123” nose and lightning stripe scheme), the ScaleTrains N scale EMD SD40T-2 is decorated for Denver & Rio Grande Western (as-delivered with 81” nose and Mars light and as-delivered with 88” nose and Gyralite) and Southern Pacific (as-delivered with 88” and 123” nose; “Kodachrome” with pre- and post-1980 details; and speed lettering, with or without Power by the Mile logo).

Features on the N scale SD40T-2 include an injection-molded plastic body; a five-pole, skew-wound motor with dual flywheels; all-wheel drive and electrical pickup; and directional light-emitting-diode headlights. Additional details include a see-through etched-metal radiator intake compartment, factory-installed and painted wire grab irons, and body-mounted plastic knuckle couplers. The locomotive will operate on code 55 and 80 rail. The SD40T-2 has a minimum radius of 9-¾” and a recommended radius of 11”.

Direct-current models with an E24 connector are priced at $149.99. Versions with an ESU LokSound V5 sound decoder retail for $254.99.
