Fleet modernization provides the railroads with the opportunity to upgrade their locomotives with today’s technology to continue going the distance,” says Progress Rail’s Executive Vice President of Rolling Stock, Marty Haycraft. “We are pleased Canadian Pacific chose to modernize their fleet with our EMD SD70ACU locomotives, which are known for their proven technology, overall cost effectiveness and ability to serve as a sustainable product operating on the main line.”
Progress Rail will modernize the 30 units at its Mayfield, Ky., and Muncie, Ind., locomotive facilities. The fleet will receive all-new traction control systems, and new cabs adhering to the latest crashworthy standards. All major components, including the existing EMD 710 engine, will be re-manufactured for optimal performance and reliability. The upgraded locomotives will be delivered to Canadian Pacific in 2019.

So what!! Would rather hear this second rate competitor is getting of hundreds of new locomotives order from Kansas City Southern & Canadian National.Thats what really counts.Who is going to make up the loss of 250 new locomotives that EMD should have gotten in the first place?

Does Mr Trump know the the CPR, the most iconic Canadian company, is having work done in the U.S. If not, could somebody tell him and maybe he will lay off Canada.
Will these units be upgraded to Tier 4?
CP originally had 61 of these units 9100-9160 but I don’t know how many are still around. I imagine if the first 30 perform well, they will have more rebuilt. NS seems to like their rebuilt units. I hope CP likes them as well. Nothing sounds like an EMD in run 8.

UP actually had around 309 of them, and has sold only 100 of them to NS as I understand it.
Will be nice to see new life for those old EMD vets. These rebuild programs are keeping EMD afloat for now, hopefully we’ll see more orders for SD70ACE-T4s in the future as the class 1 fleets age.

DANIEL – The SD90 fiasco does illustrate one positive point: locomotives are good until the frames rust away. They’re designed and built for components to be replaced, sometimes several times over.
Basically a rehash of the press release. No history of the SD90, EMD’s first and last foray into the domestic 6000 hp locomotive market. No mention of the 710 engine that was meant to be temporary until the perfected 265 became available (didn’t happen). No mention of the 100, soon to be 110, SD70ACUs already done by Norfolk Southern.
