Amtrak announces more storm cancellations, West Coast disruptions for track work (updated)

WASHINGTON — Amtrak has announced a new set of weather-related train cancellations, this time in connection with a storm expected to hit Texas and the South beginning tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 8). A relatively small number of trains today through Friday, Jan. 10, are affected.

On the Pacific Coast, Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner cancellations are also on ta, because of trackwork.

Weather cancellations were originally announced Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. ET ; additions were made at 2:20 p.m. The current list includes:

Today

— The southbound Texas Eagle, train No. 21, between St. Louis and San Antonio, Texas, and the northbound Texas Eagle in its entirety (San Antonio-Chicago).

Thursday, Jan. 9

— The southbound Texas Eagle, train No. 21, between St. Louis and San Antonio, and the northbound  Eagle, train No. 22, between San Antonio and St. Louis.

— Southbound No. 59, the Chicago-New Orleans City of New Orleans, in its entirety.

— The northbound Fort Worth-Oklahoma City Heartland Flyer, train No. 822, in its entirety.

Friday, Jan. 10

— Both directions of the City of New Orleans (trains 58 and 59) in their entirety.

— Southbound No. 821, the Oklahoma City-Fort Worth Heartland Flyer, in its entirety. [Note: this train number has been corrected.]

Saturday, Jan. 11

— The northbound City of New Orleans, train No. 58, in its entirety.

West Coast changes include:

Friday, Jan. 10

Pacific Surfliner No. 794 will operate between San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles, with bus service replacing the train between Los Angeles and San Diego. Northbound No. 595 between San Diego and Los Angeles is cancelled and will be replaced by bus No. 5811.

Friday, Jan. 10-Saturday, Jan. 11

— The southbound Coast Starlight will operate between Seattle and Emeryville, Calif., with operation between Emeryville and Los Angeles cancelled. Alternate transportation will take passengers to Sacramento for San Joaquins service to Los Angeles.

Saturday, Jan. 11-Sunday, Jan. 12

— The northbound Coast Starlight will originate at Emeryville, with alternate transportation between Los Angeles and Martinez, Calif., via San Joaquins service.

— All Pacific Surfliner trains and buses are cancelled with no alternate transportation.

Those needing to adjust reservations should call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL. Follow the Amtrak website or Amtrak Alerts on X.com for service updates.

— Updated at 7 p.m. CT with additional Texas Eagle and City of New Orleans cancellations.

  1. I guess there will be no more detours over the Tehachapihapi pass for the Coast Starlight. I regret missing the opportunities to ride that detour in the past.

  2. Did we just forget how to run trains in snow and cold weather? I feel as if this wasn’t nearly as prevalent a problem even only 20 years ago.
