This landmark transaction, announced in May 2018 as The Ravenna Revival, is the first step in KSHC’s larger plan to help revitalize the region with a rail-based economic development project called the Kentucky Rail Heritage Center. KSHC will utilize the land and the buildings on site to base its operations, restoring regionally-relevant historic rail equipment. The project will include a partnership with Estill County Schools, offering a technical skills training component to the endeavor, which will enable vocational students to practice modern trades as historic rail equipment is restored on site.
This initial railroad property purchase is the first milestone on the road to revitalizing Ravenna and the surrounding region, a process that will require continued support, diligent fundraising, federal grants, and more land transactions. It paves the way for KSHC to fully realize its long-term vision for a multi-use campus, which will give the community a dining hub, meeting and event space and potentially rail excursions that will attract visitors to the area.

CSX and KSHC spent over a year working on the details of this deal, which is a win-win for both organizations and for the future of Eastern Kentucky.

KSHC now turns its sights on revitalizing the shop and accompanying yard office into an epicenter for tourism and economic development. The three-bay car shop, built by CSX in 1991, will become a hub for the restoration of historic Chesapeake & Ohio 2-8-4 No. 2716, which celebrates its 75th birthday this December. The engine currently resides in New Haven, Ky., at the Kentucky Railway Museum.
Fundraising now will begin in earnest for the Kentucky group, who hopes to raise enough money in the next several months to lay track back to the shop and to update the building’s electrical system. A formal kick-off party and grand opening gala are planned for later this year and tickets will be made available to the general public. More information will be released in the coming weeks.

How about getting a former L&N geep or two, fleet of restored L&N hoppers plus a caboose, and run a coal extra?
First it took OVER a year so EHH was involved. As I’ve said before, if you had a nice easy job on the railroad and Mr. Harrison got rid of you as an unnecessary waste of money, you don’t like him. But if you were smart enough to understand his concepts and were open minded enough to LEARN, you’re very well now.
I certainly wish them the best and hope they succeed in their goals, but the cynic in me wonders who will be responsible for the cleanup of the inevitable pollution such a site like this has. I have seen too many of these projects like this where the selling company shoves the responsibility to the buyer and then laughs all the way to the bank. I would expect nothing less from EHH and his henchmen.
How are they going to get 2716 there? I thought CSX would not allow a steam locomotive on their tracks even if it is a cold iron move under tow.
The rails are still there from a connection with the main through a wye, but they stop well short of the car shop. If you click on the link at the end of the article above, then click on “news”, there is a map of the proposed layout. It looks pretty ambitious but if they can make it happen, it should be a 1st class attraction.

When I look at the property on Google maps, I do not see any rail connection to the adjoining CSX tracks. Will that have to rebuilt or is it not visible on Google?
WOW! Now that Hee Haw Hunter, the Wicked Warlock and Wall Street investors’ best buddy has left the property for good, looks like there IS hope that CSX will become a real railroad again afterall.
