CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Tickets are now on sale for a one-way Union Pacific excursion from Denver to Cheyenne on July 20 pulled by the railroad’s E9 locomotives. The trip, sponsored by the Sherman Hill Model Railroad Club, is a ferry move to return the locomotives and equipment to Cheyenne after the Denver-Cheyenne round trip Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days Train on July 19. Union Pacific 4-8-4 No. 844 normally pulls the trips, but the engine is currently out of service.

The train departs Denver at 1 p.m. from near the National Western Complex and arrives at the Cheyenne Depot at about 5 p.m. Dome seats are $185, while table seats are $100. Bus transportation between Cheyenne and Denver in the morning or evening is $35 per person.

For reservations call the Sherman Hill Model Railroad Club at 307-701-8444. For more information, go to http://shermanhillrails.org.

Tickets for the Denver Post Frontier Days Special will be available by online lottery beginning mid-May 2014.  Passengers who purchased tickets on last year’s train will be mailed an invitation in early May 2014 with details on how to request tickets in advance. More information is available at http://cfdtrain.com.

  2. UP's E-9's are technically, E-38-2's. UP exchanged the two V-12's for one V-16. Although the E-38-2's don't sound as throaty but nevertheless, they sound sweet.

  3. These were and are GREAT locomotives!, I remember seeing E-8's and E-9's pushing & pulling commuter coaches behind my brother's apartment on the old CB&Q line in Little Village in Chicago, the sound of those V-12's more than anything reminds me of my railfanning childhood in the 70's & 80's. I might just try to go on this trip.
