Cleanup continuing after CSX derailment near Monon, Ind.

No injuries reported; Amtrak’s Cardinal affected

CSX logoMONON, Ind. — Cleanup is continuing after 15 cars of a CSX train derailed near Monon on Saturday morning, disrupting operation of Amtrak’s Cardinal both into and out of Chicago.

The derailment occurred about 7:10 a.m. at the West Pass siding northwest of Monon. As a result, the westbound Cardinal due to arrive in Chicago on Saturday morning was terminated at Lafayette, Ind., and returned to Indianapolis; the eastbound Cardinal scheduled to depart Saturday was cancelled between Chicago and Indianapolis, with bus transportation provided between those cities. The train left Indianapolis on time at 12:15 a.m. today (Sunday, Jan. 19)

A CSX spokesman said in an email to Trains News Wire that no injuries to the crew were reported and no leaks or spills were reported.
