Rochelle webcam screen grab
The new Rochelle webcam features a larger, real-time view of the diamond with sound.
ROCHELLE, Ill. β€” Trains Magazine has launched its newly upgraded webcam at the Rochelle Railroad Park. The new camera features a higher resolution, real-time view with sound of the diamond crossing at the park. As many as 120 BNSF Railway and Union Pacific trains a day pass through the city of 9,500 residents every 24 hours.

To view the webcam, go to www.trainsmag.com.

“Rochelle is one of the best shows in America for big-time freight traffic, and the Webcam is an great way for Trains to share what goes on there every day,” Trains Editor Jim Wrinn says. “Of course, it’s got to be on every fan’s bucket list to visit Rochelle, but until you have time to get there, the Webcam is the next best thing.”

The hardware installation took place July 16, and, with some work upgrading servers, the camera went live for viewers on Monday.

“I knew we could improve the image quality, picture size and frames per second but during selection and testing process one big feature I wanted and looked for was sound,” says Kalmbach Publishing Co. Vice President of Technology James Schweder. “For me seeing trains go by is great but I love their sound and now that the camera is installed it’s the feature I love most.”

  1. Update; on the Samsung Tablet you have to go to the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner and select “desktop site” to get controls at the bottom of the screen. Seems “muted” is the default.
Hope the helps others enjoy this great site!

  2. Have watched this webcam for years and loved the update to sound, but recently have no sound? I am using the same Samsung Tablet, anyone have any ideas? My view does not have controls for sound at the bottom of the screen as posted in other comments.
    Thanks

  3. I talked to someone at trains mag last year and asked if they could move the camera back a couple of feet and a couple inches to the right. This would improve the rail fan experience greatly as you could see the signal indications on the west bound UP signal bridge. You could still see all that you view now, and a little more. Plus the indications at night, Oh well, I guess it fell on deaf ears even the person said they would check it out next time they have a maintenance check up. It could not cost that much to adjust the camera.

  4. Thanks for the new webcam. Great to be able to cross the Atlantic in less than ten seconds, and to feel even more there thanks to the sound and the improved image quality.

  5. Great picture by the new webcam, and it catches every thing including trespassers on RR property. On 07/29/2014 while viewing the webcam, at 5:20 PM, 2- adults from the road on the right crossed both mains and into wooded area on the left. At 5:22 PM, A young teen ager crossed both mains over the diamond and ran down the BN/SF outside main toward the camera. At 5:28PM, a mixed UP consist with 4 engines and horn sounding continuous passed east bound. That is not good. If the webcam records, it would be recorded.

  6. The Web Cam there is fantastic! So far this cam is the best thus far. Fostoria was the leader till it went out.

  7. Excellent Webcam. Really enjoy the sound. Just today I saw 3 trains within 15 minutes. 2 UPs, 1 BNSF, all heading westbound.Like the horns sounding at the rail crossing behind the camera. AWESOME job. Thanks.

  8. ………………….26 COMMENTS AND ONE 1 FROM CANADA…THAT SHOWS NOT MUCH INTEREST IN BIG TRAINS FROM THOSE OF US NORTH OF THE BORDER…..NOT ALL NORTH AMERICANS REALIZE THAT RAILROADS ARE THE BASE OF OUR ECONOMIC STRENGTH WHICH SUSTAINS THE MARKETS…..

  9. I just watched my 1st live train pass your new webcam with sound yet! Fantastic. Nice job and a big thank you TRAINS

  10. Kudos on the new web cam! Don't know what you did but this is the first time in over a year that I have been able to view it. The sound effects are a terrific addition. Almost like being there.! Hats off to whoever came up with the improvement.

  11. One more thing would make this great…motion activated lights so that trains at might could be lit up. Now that's what I'm talking about!

  12. My son and I make a trip to Rochelle every summer and we were just there the weekend before the new camera was installed. What an improvement this is! Thanks Trains!

  13. Nice picture. Within 5 minutes of switching to it I saw a big U.P. freight crossing. You can even hear the birds in the area. Now, about a webcam at Bailey Yard πŸ™‚
