Derailed tank cars at grade crossing
A Norfolk Southern train derailed Tuesday night, Feb. 11, 2025, in Attica, Ohio. Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.

ATTICA, Ohio — One tank car of ethanol was among those reported to be leaking after a derailment of a Norfolk Southern train Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2025) in Attica, Ohio.

The derailment occurred about 8:19 p.m., according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office. No injuries were reported.

Norfolk Southern said in a statement reported by WKYC-TV that 20 cars had derailed, four of which were leaking. The railroad described the other leaks as involving “non-hazardous cars;” the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office had previously reported one car was leaking corn syrup. The railroad and sheriff’s office both said there was no public danger from the derailment; the sheriff’s office said it had sent a sniffer drone over the incident to verify that there was no risk.

The derailment blocked a grade crossing with U.S Route 224 on Atticas’s east side. The Village of Attica announced road closures are in place.

Attica is on the NS Sandusky District, about 36 miles north (timetable west) of Marion, Ohio, and 15 miles south of Bellevue, Ohio. It is approximately 80 miles west of Cleveland.
