EDMONTON, Alberta — Cando Rail & Terminals has opened its latest facility, the Cando Southlands Rail Yard in Strathcona County, Alberta.

The new facility helps serve the Imperial Oil Strathcona Refinery in Sherwood Park, Alta., just east of Edmonton, adding operational and storage capacity for more than 600 railcars. Cando will provide rail service at both the yard and the refinery.

“This is a very exciting day for Cando Rail & Terminals,” Cando CEO Brian Cornick said in a press release. “We have been providing rail service to Imperial for more than 25 years. To be able to provide longstanding customers with increased rail capacity and create supply chain efficiencies is a real thrill.”

Imperial is currently building Canada’s largest renewable diesel facility at the refinery, which will use locally sourced feedstock, such as canola oil, to be brought to the facility by rail.

“We are excited to leverage the Southlands Rail Yard to debottleneck our logistics operations in Western Canada, support local Canadian renewable diesel production and maximize output from our existing refining assets well into the future,” said Scott Maloney, Canada fuels manager for Imperial.

Cando operates 13 terminals and manages nearly 50 industrial rail yards in North America, in addition to operating short lines and providing other rail services including transloading.
