U.S. weekly rail traffic shows slight gain over 2024

WASHINGTON — U.S. weekly rail traffic remained up, although slightly, compared to 2024 levels in the week ending Feb. 15, 2025.

According to figures from the Association of American Railroads, total traffic for the week was 480,740 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 1.5% from the same week a year ago.

The total included 209,216 carloads, down 4.8% from the corresponding week in 2024, and 271,524 containers and trailers, up 7%.

Through seven weeks of 2025, carload volume is down 0.7% compared to the same point a year ago, while intermodal units are up 9.3%. The combined traffic of 3,338,568 carloads and intermodal units represents a 4.7% increase from the same period in 2024.

North American totals for the week, from nine reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, include 311,6904 carloads, a decrease of 5.9% from the same week a year ago, and 349,663 intermodal units, a 3.5% increase. The overall volume of 661,357 carloads and intermodal units represents a 1.2% decrease.

Through seven weeks of 2025, total North American volume is up 3.6% from the same period last year. That includes a cumulative increase of 2% in Canada and an 8.5% drop in Mexico.
