Photographers spotted Cummins’ CECX No. 1919 in Northwest Ohio on Nov. 8, moving from Brookville Equipment Corp. in Brookville, Pa., to Indiana Rail Road to begin field testing on the Midwest regional. The locomotive was built as Union Pacific SD90AC No. 8559 in 2000, retired six years later in 2006 by Union Pacific and used in lease service for several years before being selected to become the testbed for Cummins large Tier 4-compliant engine: the QSK-95.
Initial conversion work on No. 1919 was done at Sygnet Rail Technologies in Tacoma, Wash., before movement to Brookville in early 2015 for completion. An industry insider says the mechanical conversion was done by Sygnet and Brookville, with Cummins planning to install the Tier 4 emissions equipment after arrival on the Indiana Rail Road. The locomotive carried the model designation HTL4200AC prior to departing Sygnet for Brookville.
CECX No. 1919 was designed to be a one-of-a-kind locomotive to test the QSK-95 engine. Cummins corporate offices are located in Columbus, Ind., about an hour south of the railroad’s Indianapolis headquarters.
