Anacostia Rail Holdings logoMICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Short line company Anacostia Rail Holdings has become the newest member of RailPulse, the consortium working to bring telematics to the North American freight car fleet.

The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad will be the first of Anacostia’s six railroads to introduce the technology, adding telematic units supported by RailPulse’s open-architecture platform to 100 recently delivered 48-foot coil steel railcars. As a RailPulse subscriber, the Anacostia railroads will have access to telematics from all equipped cars routed to or from their online customers, regardless of car ownership.

“We have supported RailPulse since its 2020 inception and are enthusiastic about the coalition’s initiative to create an industry-wide opportunity to increase both shipment visibility and rail car safety,” Eric Jakubowski, Anacostia chief commercial officier, said in a press release.

RailPulse capabilities include ETA calculations, load-status information for accurate loaded and empty-mileage calculations, dwell reporting, impact detection, and stationary loading and unloading detection.

“This vote of confidence from Anacostia Rail Holdings is further proof that rail industry leaders are invested in giving shippers the visibility they need,” said RailPulse General Manager David Shannon. “Early users are supporting our vision for a smarter rail ecosystem.”

Anacostia joins Genesee & Wyoming, Watco, and Railroad Development Corp. (owner of Iowa Interstate) as shortline/regional railroad members of the RailPulse coalition. Four Class I railroads — CPKC, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific — are also members, along with GATX, TrinityRail, The Greenbrier Companies, and shipper Bunge North America.
