DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. — John M. Koch, founder of railroad video manufacturer Green Frog Productions Ltd., died Feb. 3 in Kennesaw, Ga.

Koch was an avid fan and modeler of the Rio Grande Southern narrow gauge, and he built an extensive and highly detailed On3 scale model railroad at his home. In fact, Green Frog Productions was named after the Green Frog saloon, across the street from the Rio Grande Southern’s Dolores, Colo., depot.

Green Frog was one of the pioneer makers of high quality railroad videos. Koch led the company through the transition to dvd when many competitors were going out of business or merging with other companies. Koch turned over operation of Green Frog to his three sons several years ago.

  1. Very sad news, but Mr Koch had a great life and contributed much to our hobby.

I still own more than a dozen Green Frog VHS tapes. Those and Herron's inspired me to venture into railroad video production.

My good wishes to John Koch's family.

  2. I have several of his videos and I like them all. I plan to purchase more soon. The hard part is deciding which ones to buy because they are all worthwhile additions to the collection.

  3. His legacy will live on, his products are four stars to me and I've always been happy with the videos I've gotten from them.
