Check out the all-new ScaleTrains HO EMD GP40 diesel locomotive in our latest product review video. Model Railroader Senior Editor Cody Grivno shares a brief history of the four-axle road switcher and explains why Chicago & North Western 5525 is historically significant; points out the many prototype-specific details on the Rivet Counter line model; and demonstrates the sound and light functions on the model, which has an ESU LokSound V5 sound decoder. Then watch the GP40 switch cars on the Winston-Salem Southbound Tar Branch.
In addition to Chicago & North Western (yellow and green with Employee Owned and Chicago System heralds), the ScaleTrains HO EMD GP40 is decorated for Denver & Rio Grande Western (black and orange with large “Flying Grande” lettering), Louisville & Nashville (gray and yellow), Penn Central (black and white), Milwaukee Road (orange and black), and Western Pacific (Perlman Green [with and without pilot stripes] and American Revolution Bicentennial schemes). The four-axle road unit is offered in one to six road numbers per paint scheme.
The GP40 uses plastic and die-cast metal construction. Other features on the C&NW model include a nose-mounted gong bell; a working Tomar 804-1274 strobe light on the cab roof; and a detailed cab interior with an Association of American Railroads control stand, cab blowers, late seats with armrests, a rear wall, and a separate floor. The model has a minimum radius of 18” and a recommended radius of 22”.
Direct-current models with a 21-pin connector are priced at $199.99. Versions with a dual-model ESU LokSound V5 sound decoder, two cube-type speakers, and an ESU-designed PowerPack with two super capacitors sell for $299.99.
