Metra and BNSF Railway trains meet at the Cicero Metra station in August 2017. A derailment Monday on the track on the right, the connection from the Belt Railway of Chicago to the BNSF, has led to inbound Metra trains skipping the Cicero stop this morning, because of damage to the structure at the end of the platform.

CICERO, Ill. — Service on Metra’s most-used commuter line, the BNSF, is operating with one small disruption this morning after a derailment Monday evening damaged a portion of the Cicero Metra station.

Inbound trains are not stopping at Cicero during the morning commuter rush because the canopy on the platform was damaged by a BNSF derailment on an adjacent track. Passengers have been advised to detrain at BNSF’s LaVergne or Halsted Street stations, or to use the CTA Pink Line, which is honoring Metra tickets.

Service to Cicero is anticipated to resume with inbound train No. 1260 at 9:38 a.m.; boarding is likely to occur from what is normally the outbound platform.

Chicago Sun-Times photos show tank cars piled against the structure protecting the pedestrian ramp to the passenger platform. The derailment occurred on the south side of the Metra platform, where tracks connect from Cicero Yard and the BNSF main line to the Belt Railway of Chicago.
