CHICAGO — Amtrak weather cancellations are continuing today (Sunday, April 6) as the center of the country continues to deal with a storm system leaving widespread flooding and other damage.

According to the Amtrak Alerts social media feed, The City of New Orleans, which had been cancelled outright on Friday and Saturday, today will not operate in either direction between New Orleans and Carbondale, Ill. The southbound Texas Eagle has been cancelled between St. Louis and Fort Worth, Texas; the previous two days, it had been cancelled in both directions between St. Louis and Marshall, Texas.

The company is also reporting that it has cancelled the Kansas City-St. Louis portion of combined Missouri River Runner/Lincoln Service train No. 318, and westbound Missouri River Runner No. 311, because of an incident involving a railcar on a single-track segment of UP’s Sedalia Subdivision about 40 miles east of Kansas City, Mo. A Union Pacific spokeswoman says the incident was not a derailment, despite initial reports, and the incident is currently under investigation. The track was cleared around noon, allowing the afternoon River Runner trains in each direction to operate normally.

Also, earlier today, Amtrak announced cancellation of the southbound Floridian between Chicago and Toledo, Ohio, because of major delays to the northbound train that left Miami on Friday, April 4. [See “Weather leads to Amtrak cancellations …,” Trains News Wire, April 4, 2024]. Bus transportation will be provided for the 243-mile segment between Chicago and Toledo, where the train will be turned. The Chicago-bound train arrived in Toledo at 7:32 p.m., 14 hours, 24 minutes late; Amtrak’s website says the departure from Toledo for Miami, scheduled for 11:49 p.m., may be delayed to account for inbound arriving passengers.

Weather.com reports that at least 17 people have died — 10 in Tennessee alone — from severe storms in the Midwest and South, with rainfall totals as high as 13.4 inches in Mayfield, Ky.

  1. In fact, there is no information available online about any derailment in Missouri in the last 48 hours.
