NEW YORK — Catherine Rinaldi, who retired at the end of March as president of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Metro-North Railroad, did not take long to return to a position in public transportation.

Rinaldi was named Monday (April 7, 2025) as the first executive vice president for the Gateway Development Commission, the agency overseeing the Hudson Tunnels Project and other major Northeast Corridor infrastructure work.

The Gateway Commission says Rinaldi’s position will be responsible for strengthening the organization’s ability to deliver the Hudson Tunnel Project,. She will oversee essential administrative functions, develop and track metrics to ensure the commission achieves its objectives, and other address other responsibilities.

“Cathy Rinaldi’s impressive track record speaks for itself. At every agency she’s led, she’s succeeded in instilling a results-driven ethic,” GDC CEO Tom Prendergast, who worked with Rinaldi as MTA CEO from 2013 to 2017, said in a press release. “With half our contracts in construction and more on the way, top talent like Cathy will help keep the Hudson Tunnel Project on scope, schedule, and budget.”

Rinaldi, who joined the MTA in 2003, served as Metro-North president from 2018 until the end of March. She concurrently served as interim Long Island Rail Road president from February 2022 to October 2023.
