
WASHINGTON — Weekly U.S. rail traffic continues to run ahead of 2024 levels, with increases in both carload and intermodal traffic.
Statistics from the Association of American Railroads for the week ending April 19 shows total traffic of 496,053 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 4.5% over the same week a year ago. The overall figure includes 224,436 carloads, up 3.4%, and 271,617 containers and trailers, up 5.4%.
Through 16 weeks of 2025, railroads have recorded total volume of 7,804,809 carloads and intermodal units, up 5% over the same period a year ago. That includes a 1.1% increase in carload traffic and an 8.3% gain in intermodal units.
North American volume for the week, from nine reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, was 685,696 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.3% over the corresponding week in 2024. The 329,345 carloads represented a 0.4% decline, while the 356,351 intermodal units are a 2.9% increase.
For the year to date, North American volume is 10,737,028 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.2% from the first 16 weeks of 2024. Canadian traffic is level with 2024 levels, while Mexican volume is down 10.1%.
