MONTREAL — Canadian National and a union representing more than 3,000 trainmen reached a deal on a new contract Monday just hours before a strike, CTV News reports.

“An agreement in principle has been reached,” said Doug Finnson, president of Teamsters Canada Rail Conference. “We’re working on the final language at this point.” Union members still must ratify the deal after it is finalized.

CN employees were planning to walk off the job early Tuesday morning if a deal was not reached. Teamsters Canada had issued a 72-hour strike notice on Saturday.

“We’re pleased to have reached this agreement,” spokesperson Patrick Waldron tells CTV. Details of the new contract were not immediately available.

Shippers across Canada were concerned about the possibility of a strike and had urged the government to step in to stop it. Groups like the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada warned that the strike could have resulted in plant closures had it happened.
