JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — CSX Corp. today announced that James M. Foote is joining the company as chief operating officer. Foote will have responsibility for both operations and sales and marketing and will be based at the company’s headquarters in Jacksonville.

“CSX is pleased to welcome an experienced railroader who will help continue to drive the company’s transformation” said E. Hunter Harrison, president and CEO. “Jim’s proven track record with Precision Scheduled Railroading will be a significant asset as we continue to drive value for shareholders and customers.”

Foote will take on the responsibilities of Cindy M. Sanborn, executive vice-president and chief operating officer, and Fredrik J. Eliasson, executive vice-president and chief sales and marketing officer, both of whom plan to resign effective Nov. 15 to pursue other interests, but will remain engaged in supporting the transition until early 2018.

Ellen M. Fitzsimmons, executive vice president, law and public affairs, general counsel and corporate secretary, has announced her retirement from CSX, effective Nov. 15. At that time, Nathan D. Goldman, the company’s current vice-president risk compliance and general counsel, will be promoted to executive vice-president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary. Ellen will remain engaged in supporting the transition until early 2018.

Harrison said, “On behalf of the board of directors and all CSX employees, I would also like to sincerely thank Cindy, Fredrik, and Ellen for their dedication to the company and wish them well in their future endeavors. These senior leaders will be missed, and their contributions will have a lasting and positive impact on the organization for many years.”

Edward J. Kelly, III, CSX chairman said “The Board looks forward to welcoming Jim and Nathan in their new roles and wishes to express its thanks to Cindy, Fredrik, and Ellen for their tremendous contributions and distinguished CSX careers. Each of them has brought great value to the success, the people and the reputation of CSX, and they will leave CSX well positioned for the next stage.”

  1. I knew that Cindy would be leaving after seeing her sitting next to Harrison at the testimony several weeks ago. I could see the wheels spinning in her head and the looks she was giving Harrison. She did not want to be there. Cindy is sharp enough to know when to jump off the runaway train.

  2. Sanborn still remains of CSX’s largest shareholder if I remember correctly. She could still have a say in how the railroad is run.

  3. Take a look at the GOP today and you’ll know where “Go Republicans” originated. If I ran a railroad I’d hire Ms. Sanborn. I imigine some railroad will if she desires to remain in the industry.

  4. The purge continues. Why doesn’t he just fire everyone? That’s his goal. He’ll get the operating ratio below 50 even if it destroys the company.

  5. The more I thought about it, the more I believe I have the contractual agreement backwards. It was to keep Sanborn, Eliasson, and one other EVP from cashing in and leaving if an outsider became President. So Elisasson became President.

  6. Another great corporate line when “separated” or “displaced” from employment is, “I want to spend more time with my family.”

  7. “Leaving to pursue other interests” is generally code for “asked to resign or be fired”.

When Harrison took over CP, he brought in his own senior team and the implementation and results were fast. At CSX he did not do that, perhaps because he could not take people away from CP, and the implementation and results have been slow. I suspect he wants people who understand his vision and know how to make it happen.

  8. I recall a contractual arrangement instituted during Michael Ward’s tenure that protected Sanborn and Eliasson from being fired by an “outsider” President, i.e., Harrison. Prior to Harrison’s arrival, Eliasson was promoted to President and Chief Marketing Officer. Harrison initially came on board as Chief Executive Officer. About three months later Harrison became President and Chief Executive Officer. Eliasson went back to being Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

  9. “Harry” time out and throw the switch (one of your new rat hires will do the work), to a reality zombie show where the dumb heads do not know who you are and the lowlife that could costar with Harvey Weinstein .You have more money then you can ever spend on O2 that will never save you, but as a living dead here is your path to immortal fame your ultimate reward.

  10. Simplification of this press release: They were fired by a functioning lunatic hell-bent on destruction of a railroad.

  11. What would CSX or rather EHH do if a sudden surge of traffic occurred similar to what CN is experiencing ? While EHH is cleaning house , some others are hiring .

  12. Translation: “pursue other interests” = fired with golden parachute.

“will be missed” = don’t let the door hit you on the way out

“their contributions will have a lasting and positive impact on the organization for many years” = utter nonsense.

    Wonder if they have “non-competes”?

  13. EHH just committed a MORTAL SIN, Firing a woman and replacing her with a man! You will get the wrath of GOD from the Democratic party and Hillary in particular!

  14. Adios, amigas! Don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you! Now we can really get this party started!

  15. I’m surprised they’re even staying around to help in the transition…if it was me I’d bail immediately and then write a tell all book…might as well cash in while the fire is hot.

  16. Well Cindy – now we know how your 28-hour departure schedule worked out – it worked you right out the door.
