The loop will be located in downtown San Francisco, right in the middle of the F-Line between the Castro District and the waterfront and is part of a major effort to revitalize Market Street. Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that it would be contributing $15 million to the effort. The Better Market Street Initiative calls for improved pedestrian access, bike lanes, transit lanes and more. However, one of the biggest parts will be the instillation of a new loop on McAllister Street and Charles Brenham Place.
The loop will enable MUNI to turn streetcars in the middle of the route and provide more service to the busiest section between downtown and Fisherman’s Wharf. Construction is expected to start in 2020.
“(This effort) will help deliver a modern, efficient transit system worthy of America’s cradle of innovation,” says U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “The Better Market Street Initiative will cut through the congestion and improve speed and capacity for millions of workers, students and families, while better protecting pedestrians and bicycles.”
