WAUKESHA, Wis. — Canada’s two Class I railroads are dealing with derailments in tight places on Thursday.

Canadian National was first at about 9 a.m. Central time Thursday when locals reported hearing a derailment in Manitoba. Railroad crews soon reported to an “incident” that involved two trains east of Portage la Prairie, Man. A CN representative tells Trains that the event derailed two locomotives and eight freight cars. The derailments prompted VIA Rail Canada to bus passengers to their destinations in Winnipeg, Man., according to the Winnipeg Free Press. The route re-entered service overnight on Thursday into Friday.

More information on this wreck is available online.

Also on Thursday, a Canadian Pacific freight train derailed about 11 a.m. Mountain time, about five miles east of Field, British Columbia, a CP representative tells Trains. Sixteen freight cars derailed, but there were no injuries or public safety concerns, the representative says. The derailment site is in the Yoho National Park and near the Upper-Spiral Tunnel, according to Globalnews.ca.

Canadian Transportation Safety Board investigators are looking into the cause of that derailment.
