Barbados adds steam tourist line NEWSWIRE

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados — The island nation of Barbados in the Caribbean has a brand new steam railway which was opened officially March 11 by the country’s prime minister, The Honourable Mia Amor Mottley. Services began in advance of the opening day on Jan. 21, and for the first month were diesel operated; steam operation began on Feb. 24 after the loco arrived from England by container ship.

The railway has been built in the privately owned historic St. Nicholas Abbey estate which receives around 35,000 visitors each year to visit the 17th century mansion house and former sugar plantation. The idea behind the line is to enable visitors to travel through a forest to a nearby viewpoint where panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea are possible. The line is only around 2 miles long but climbs significant gradients along its route.

The 2-foot-6-inch gauge line is operated by a steam loco built in Germany in 1914 for use by a sugar mill in what is now Indonesia and rescued by British railfans in the late 1990s. The locomotive – an 0-4-4-0 Mallet — was completely rebuilt by British steam loco specialists at the Statfold Barn heritage railway in England in 2018 and now has a tender. Three passenger cars were also built at Statfold Barn for the new line.

The new line has a turntable at one end on top of the hill – this is made from concrete not steel as it is exposed to salt water from the sea – and it is entirely manual so the loco crew, and if they want to help, the passengers, turn the loco by hand. At the other end of the line a big loop has been built to simplify the operation with a passenger depot and loco shop near to the historic mansion house.

Barbados previously had a railway but it was shuttered before World War Two. Opening in 1881 the 24 mile 3-foot-6-inch gauge line connected Bridgetown and Belleplaine, St Andrews; never financially successful it was sold in 1897 to new owners who re-gauged it to 2-foot-6-inches and bought three new locos from Baldwin. Still unsuccessful it was taken over by the government in 1916 and despite a few good years (and buying another Baldwin loco) it was closed down in 1937 and everything was scrapped during World War II.

  1. St. Kitts has a tourist railroad that offers shore excursions for visiting cruise ships. It utilizes an old sugar cane line which circles the island. The excursion presently covers only part of the line, however. Eventually they hope to rehabilitate the entire line.

  2. There another steam operation in the carribean that already was a shore excursion for princess Cruise.

  3. Sounds like a good spot for a cruise ship shore excursion. Taieri Gorge Railway in New Zealand, White Pass and Yukon both cater to the cruise passengers. There are others.

  4. The St. Kitts operation utilizes diesel locomotives, not steam. I think there is one derelict steam locomotive remaining somewhere on the island.
