These days modelers are blessed with an abundance of materials for scratchbuilding. Sheet and strip styrene, ABS plastic, brass, copper, aluminum, and wood are just some of the products available. However, when I build structures for my S scale Buffalo Creek & Gauley RR (see Great Model Railroads 2011), I use mat board, rose board, and index cards, materials that were commonly used decades ago. I used these materials when I scratchbuilt my first structure in the mid-1970s, and happy with the results, have stuck with them ever since, building more than 50 structures to date. With my latest project, Sullivan Manufacturing, I’ll show you how to use tried-and-true materials in the May 2013 Model Railroader.

  1. Mr. Stover's article and drawings are very interesting and I think a completed model of it would fit on any layout in any time period after the 1870's to the present ( as a really decrepit building) and on a variety of scale layouts. I would like to see a set of scale drawings of the accompanying buildings in the article be made available also. Thanks Mr. Stover and MR!

  2. Great Plans – the materials list on page 33 is very loose if you want to build it exactly as illustrated!

  3. Like TOM BROOKS I plan to build it – if my hands stay calm enaught to do it. But first I have to look on the layout for space.

  4. looks complicated for a newby in HO, but the plans are well done and as soon as I can get the material I'll start.
by the way is there a materials list available?

    THANKS, Bo…

  5. Nice set of plans, and good to read the above tips. Unfortunately will have to wait a while to read the article as we are way behind on this side of the pond!

  6. I will use the plan to build one in 1/29th scale for my Large scale layout.Well done for bringing us another great plan.

  7. Work on small budget so this is wonderful. Much better than paying $100 or more for a kit. Thank you

  8. J L, According to the article, the 4th side has no doors or windows. So, you can do as you please. Good luck with it.

  9. Roger, Print the N Scale Drawings, then enlarge them on a copier. I was able to set it to 183 for HO and they measured out to be right. Looks like a nice structure to make. I'll be looking to build one in the future. Give it a try.

  10. Measured with a scale ruler the plans are N scale. The fourth side is probably a mirror image of the front. You can add to or leave off details (windows, doors etc) to suit.

  11. Brilliant! Just teh job for the US layout I'm creating for my grandson here in London UK.
    Thanks guys.

  12. I immediately downloaded these plans and will begin collecting materials and supplies to build my own version. Many thanks to Brooks Stover for the story, and to MR for printing it–modeling and scratchbuilding articles such as this one are much appreciated.

  13. I LOVE THE BUILDING AND WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IT. CAN I GET A DRAWING OF THE FOURTH SIDE?? I NEED IT TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT. THANKS EMAIL ME AN ANSWER PLEASE

  14. I think the drawings on your web site are not N scale. I believe that they are almost HO. The reason I said that is I took the copies from the web site and asked to have them increase to O Scale and they came out 12 feet 6inches as over twenty five feet in O Scale. The drawings in May Issue of Model Railroader appear to be the correct size. Thanks for the plans I can draw my own to the correct size. Great Article.

  15. I TOO AM HOPING TO BUILD THIS PROJECT ….IT WILL FIT IN WITH MY RAILROAD I AM BUILDING …. BUT I WILL BUILD IT IN 1/24TH SCALE SINE I MODEL IN G SCALE

  16. How about something about scratchbuilding rolling stock and locomotives? Not to mention making parts that can't be had, like N scale drivers!

  17. hi there…thanks for the drawing. I am going to give it a go. Is this really in N Scale? I've printed it 1:1 and it seems large to me?

  18. I will not likely build this particular building as drawn, but it will be a great starting point and looks as if it will accept easily modfification.
