Walthers is pleased to officially announce its newest HO Scale name train – the world-famous 20th Century Limited. Like its famous prototype, the First Edition 20th Century Limited is completely “New from Diesels to Lookout Lounge!” For the first time, modelers can build a complete and affordable Century fleet with authentic replicas of the 1948 train, including nine all-new cars, and new PROTO 2000® Phase II EMD E7 diesels. First Edition models will include a special certificate of authenticity and in-depth history. In addition, a one-of-a-kind figure and accessory set, based on the classic publicity photo that defined Century elegance at its finest, will also be produced with eight hand-painted figures and a 12″ long reproduction of the famed red carpet rolled out for passengers as they boarded this flagship train. Deliveries begin in December 2008 with the “… Bridge” Series 4-4-2 Sleeper, and continue into 2009.

Fast Facts: No train fired the imagination like New York Central’s 20th Century Limited. Its exclusive clientele and blistering schedule between New York and Chicago made it the stuff of legends for 65 years. A favorite with business and industry leaders, its luxurious accommodations – including a red carpet on the platform at New York – also attracted stars of stage and screen, further fueling the train’s celebrity status and romantic image.

First streamlined in 1938, this Century put in several years of tough wartime service. And with big plans for its post-war passenger fleet, New York Central spent considerable time and money to re-do its flagship. The new Century debuted in September 1948 with some refurbished 1938 cars (made necessary by delivery delays) and all-new equipment from Pullman-Standard. New power in the form of EMD E7 diesel sets was also delivered. But as its riders took to the airlines and highways, the Century lost its luster, and quietly ended 65 years of service in late 1967.

EMD E7 Phase II Diesels
Like the New York Central*, modelers will want the best motive power available to pull their 1948 Century! That’s why we’re taking the wraps off another “secret” project, the PROTO 2000® EMD Phase II EMD E7 diesel – a completely new body style, offered for the first time in plastic!

Features: Based on units assigned to the Century, these models feature the correct large rooftop radiator grids and side vents in place of some windows, designed to improve engine cooling on the prototypes. In addition, the models come in multiple unit numbers with a host of New York Central-specific details, and are factory-finished in authentic paint, lettering and striping to match the cars. And they’ll be available in both Sound and DCC equipped, or Standard DC powered versions in Fall 2009**.
