The locomotive traveled over the Adams Subdivision on Thursday, arriving at Butler Yard in the west Milwaukee suburbs around 1 p.m. The railroad spotted the locomotive at the south end of the yard near Capital Drive behind a commercial development, making for easy spectator access. Even after the locomotive was shut down and stream crew went off duty in the afternoon, people still streamed in to catch a glimpse.
The locomotive departed Butler after 8 a.m. Friday, bound for the Windy City. Fans lined the overpasses along state Route 794 south of downtown to catch a glimpse, even as the morning sun faded to a bland gray. Yet more followed the train on the parkway south of downtown Milwaukee.
Ahead is a three-day display in West Chicago, Ill., along the busy triple-track freight and commuter line through Chicago’s western suburbs, before returning to Cheyenne on Aug. 8.
