NORTH PLATTE, Neb. ā€” Media outlets in western Nebraska report that more Union Pacific railroaders are out of work because of less traffic on the railroad.

The North Platte Telegraph on Wednesday reported that an unknown number of railroaders are expected to be let go in the coming days, and that this would be the fifth furlough or layoff of workers in the past year. The newspaper cites a railroad representative saying that the railroaders could be called back to duty if market conditions change.

  1. Iā€™d argue that John. Latest AAR figures posted in another Newswire story indicate volume last week was down 5.2% on a year over year basis. Railroads and trucking companies have essentially been in a freight recession since the beginning of this year.

  2. Walter, this isn’t about the nations economy, which is doing fine. This is about railroads operating more efficiently needing less employees.

Now I could go into PSR and rr’s concerns about quarterly market values. But that has been thoroughly discussed many times on this site.

  3. I thought the economy was doing so well. So this is the fifth furlough or layoff of workers in the past year. Heard US steal has a layoff of at least 200 today. I guess things aren’t as good as some say.
