SANDPOINT, Idaho – Ralph E. Hallock, who began contributing photos to Trains in the late 1940s, died Aug. 20 in Sandpoint. He was 93. According to a profile of Hallock in the March 1957 issue, he began photographing trains in his native northern New Jersey before entering high school. He was a photography instructor for the Army Air Corps in Denver before his discharge in 1946. Hallock’s most active period of rail photography followed, when he was a student at the University of Denver. In 1950 he took a job in the traffic department of Alcoa in western Pennsylvania, launching a career in industrial traffic management from which he retired in 1991.
Hallock’s photo credit appeared in various rail publications over the years. He authored two articles for Classic Trains, in the Fall 2017 and Fall 2018 issues.
