LUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh, India — Officials in the northeast Indian city of Lucknow have banned bananas from the provincial capital city’s Charbaugh Railway station.

Bureaucrats say the yellow fruit’s peels contribute to dirtying the station. They’ve warned fruit sellers that any one violating the banana ban will be dealt with strictly.

A vendor said the fruit is a favorite of the city’s less fortunate, who find they can afford the relatively cheap food. India Today quoted a passenger saying that the more probable problem plaguing station platforms is apparent: plastics.
