KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of the Congo — A Congolese freight train derailment this morning has killed at least 50 people, according to several media reports.

The U.K.’s Independent newspaper reports that the train derailed about 3 a.m. in the southeast of the country.

The people who died were reportedly riding the train illegally as stowaways. Three of the freight cars reportedly derailed, but unaffected portions of the train continued on to their destination, MSN News reports. Multiple outlets say the death toll may be higher or much lower, depending on which source is used.
