Canadian Pacific Railway No. 7015, one of two recently released SD70ACU units in heritage paint schemes, was pressed into service as power for a business train after CP  FP9A No. 4106 suffered a mechanical failure Saturday. The train departed St. Paul, Minn., on Sunday morning bound for Kansas City. This was the first time one of the heritage rebuilds has led a CP train.

The locomotive is one of ten being released in a heritage paint scheme after being rebuilt by Progress Rail in Mayfield, Ky. [See “Canadian Pacific releases two SD70ACU heritage  locomotives,” Trains News Wire, Sept. 16, 2019.] It is part of an order for 60 SD70ACUs using the railroad’s stored SD9043MACs, being rebuilt by Progress Rail in Kentucky. The first four SD70ACUs, Nos. 7000-7003, were recently put in service in British Columbia.

Canadian Pacific CEO Keith Creel selected the Tuscan Red scheme from designs presented to him. CP FP9A’s 1401 and 4107 remain on the train as power.

  1. I don’t understand why you need the two trailing F units with a brand new SD70 that can pull tons of cars by its self , just to pull not even 10 passenger cars , whats missing on the SD70 that the F-units have ????

  2. I’m looking forward to seeing more retro colors on trains. I recently suggested several ideas for retro colors on the NY MTA and others.

  3. My only complaint is that it has debuted in the states not at home.There are actually two versions out there. The script requires more depth for the cursive. I like seeing the beaver but he never road the original freight fleet. Only the RS 10, GP 9, torpedos and a few Trainmasters in dual service carried a smaller version. The FA1 and 2’s both versions did carry a large beaver and EMD F7and 9’s a smaller version.
    According to those in the know there is no plans at present to roll out any American based Heritage paint jobs so do not go looking for any special gifts on the Ho;HO Holiday trains!! And we have been told that the units will work system wide at this point with no real hints what, when, why or where.Business as usual.

  4. Neat paint scheme. Yes it does liven up what is otherwise a rather “boxy” (and unaesthetic?) modern locomotive.

    Any idea if CP will do a Milwaukee Road or Soo Line “Heritage” unit as part of this 10-unit fleet?

  5. As memory serves the SD9043MA Cs used to work the potash trains from southern BC to Portland, OR. Are the new units in BC assigned to that duty?
