CASSELMAN, Ontario — The Village of Casselman, a community of about 3,500 some 34 miles southeast of Ottawa, is in talks with VIA Rail Canada to increase rail service to and from the Canadian capital during the morning and evening rush hours.
The CBC reports that Casselman Mayor Daniel Lafleur would like to see a pilot program as soon as possible to improve transit options for commuters. The community is currently served by a shuttle bus service to Ottawa, and by four trains in each direction on the route between Ottawa and Montreal, 90 miles to the east.
VIA said in a news release that the proposal would be discussed as part of ongoing plans to improve rail service in Ottawa and Quebec. The proposal already has the support of Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, and Casselman is trying to gain support of nearby communities.
Imagine if the Tories won the election then they will aim to reduce the country`s deficit possibly the great risk of closing VIA Rail; entirely by making Canada as one of the most difficult countries to get around with no transcontinental bus service, a now obsolete mostly unsafe two-lane Trans-Canada Highway and over priced air fares. Going around in Europe is a piece of cake and overall cheaper not by populated locations but likely by well management planning.

ANNA – Curious that they would depend on VIA’s skeleton service to be expanded. Everyone else who wants commuter rail gets as far away from either VIA or Amtrak as they can get.
I’m not familiar with the suburban end of corridor. I have been to Ottawa by VIA (once) around 1984 and I recall a substantial bus shuttle from the VIA station to the city centre. If that’s still the case then rail commuter seems pointless.
Today’s election I’m calling it for the Tories by means of coalition. In recent years the Left has made big gains in unlikely places like Alberta but I think that’s run its course.

Ottawa now has a light rail connection between the VIA station on Tremblay Rd and downtown Ottawa.
