OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific now has positive train control operating on 93 percent of its system where the collision-avoidance safety system will be required, the company reports in a press release.
UP implemented PTC on 1,113 route-miles in the quarter ending Sept. 30, 2019, bringing its total PTC mileage to 15,791. Another 1,271 miles remain for full implementation. The railroad reports it expects to have the technology implemented on all required lines by the end of 2019, a year ahead of the congressionally mandated deadline.
The company’s work to achieve interoperability with freight and passenger railroads using its line continues. Of the 31 such operators which must achieve interoperability, 11 have done so, representing 85 percent of UP’s interoperable train-miles on its PTC network.
How do you define if it “worked”? While a train might make an unintended stop, something in the computer programming triggered the stop, so on some level it “worked”.
@ John Winter – I doubt that there will be publicly documented events of PTC’s efficacy because human errors where PTC has prevented an accident result in employee disciplinary action. Such events are not generally released for public scrutiny.
Are there any documented events where PTC has worked & prevented an accident? Just wondering.
