MCPHERSON, Iowa — BNSF Railway crews are working to re-open a stretch of Iowa main line closed early Wednesday after a derailment in the western part of the state.
According to a BNSF service advisory, a train derailed near McPherson about 3:30 a.m., blocking the main line. A railroad representative did not respond to a Trains request for comment.
The line is also the regular route of Amtrak’s California Zephyr.
Amtrak representative Marc Magliari says eastbound Zephyr passengers detoured over Union Pacific tracks on Wednesday, and bused to missed stops en route. Westbound passengers are expected to take the Southwest Chief to Galesburg, Ill., where they will detrain for chartered buses across Iowa.
