SALT LAKE CITY — Media outlets in Utah are reporting on an explosion of select cars of a Union Pacific train that derailed over the weekend.

KUTV, the region’s CBS affiliate, reports that 24 freight cars, including as many as 11 tank cars carrying propane or biodiesel, derailed south of Eureka, Utah, on Saturday, March 30. Several of the cars were leaking contents.

The television station cites a local law enforcement official who said a controlled explosion of certain leaking tank cars from the Union Pacific freight trains was the best way to control the leakage.

That explosion created a fireball seen for miles.
