DULUTH, Minn. – The Lake Superior Railroad Museum and its North Shore Scenic Railroad will host Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 in Duluth this summer. The organization’s “News from the Railroad” online newsletter says the 4-8-8-4 will be at the museum on July 20-21.

“This might be the most exciting single event in our history of the railroad museum,” Curator Tim Schandel says.

The locomotive will arrive in Duluth on July 19, presumably over BNSF Railway’s Hinckley Subdivision, over which UP has trackage rights. The engine will come from Boone, Iowa, and St. Paul, where it could also be displayed.

No. 4014 will be on display along with a train of eight cars from UP’s executive fleet, including the Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car. At the same time, the museum said it would have Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-0 No. 332 (Duluth & Northeastern 28) under steam. Other activities will include live music, festival foods, and a craft beer garden.

UP has said No. 4014 will go on a tour of the system this year, but only the trip from Omaha to Boone on July 15 and fall trips out of Los Angeles have been announced so far.
