Outside review of MBTA derailments could take three months NEWSWIRE

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has hired an engineering firm to review its recent derailments, a process that could take up to three months.

Passenger rail consulting firm LTK Engineering will conduct the review, WCVB-TV reports. It will look at two years’ worth of incidents, including the June 8 Green Line derailment near Fenway Park and the June 11 Red Line derailment.

MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak told the agency’s Fiscal and Management Control Board on Monday that the review is “to make sure we are turning over every rock, that we have looked at everything.” He also suggested the board might want to initiate a broader review of the system.

Meanwhile, MBTA officials said Red Line riders should continue to expect 20-minute delays as work continues to repair damage from the Red Line accident at the JFK/UMass station [See “MBTA Red Line subway derailment injures one, disrupts morning commute,” Trains News Wire, June 11, 2019.]

Repairs have required repairing 200 feet of third rail, 200 feet of track, wires and cables, and the signal system. The agency said Red Line riders could continue to expect 20 minute delays while work continues.

The MBTA has been running extra commuter trains between South Station and Braintree to help offset the Red Line issues.
