An unwavering passenger train supporter, he advocated for better Amtrak operations in his state, and he, along with other volunteers, were instrumental in saving Tampa Union Station. He served on the Friends of Tampa Union Station as secretary, as president of Tampa Union Station Preservation and Redevelopment, and as president of the Florida Coalition of Rail Passengers. Long involved in private car operations, often in conjunction with close friends Bob Willetts and the late Dick Horstmann, he served as secretary of the American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners. He also served on the board of the Florida Railroad Museum.
A Texas native and a law school graduate there, he always said his favorite railroad was the Katy.
He is survived by his son, John R. “Jackson” McQuigg and his partner, Scott Zettergren of Atlanta.

There will be a visitation on Friday, June 28, 2019 from 6-8 p.m. at Adams and Jennings Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
