WASHINGTON — Rail projects in Arizona, Indiana, and Oregon are among 10 transit programs informed of new federal funding in a series of Twitter messages Thursday night by President Donald Trump. The rail projects include;

$100 million for Phoenix’s Valley Metro, for its 5.5-mile South Central Avenue extension of its light rail system. It is the second $100 million infusion of federal funds for the project, which the Arizona Republic says will cost an estimated $1.3 billion and is set to open in 2024.

$100 million to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District for the South Shore Line’s West Lake Corridor project, which will build an 8-mile spur from Hammond to Dyer, Ind. South Shore President Michael Noland told the Times of Northwest Indiana, “We’ve been very confident about the progress of the West Lake project, but to get recognition from the [Federal Transportation Adminstration] and the White House — that’s incredibly strong support.

$99.99 million to Portland’s Tri-Met to extend the light rail Red Line from Beaverton to Hillsboro. The extension would serve 10 stations already served by the light rail Blue Line, addressing crowding on Blue Line trains during peak periods.

Also cited in the series of tweets were bus projects in Milwaukee; Pittsburgh; Albany, N.Y.; Ogden, Utah; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Miami-Dade, Fla.; and Indianapolis and Lawrence, Ind.

  1. I agree with reader Jim Cattuzzo. I also preferred the previous News Wire format. Unknown if this is cheaper in some way.

  2. I really liked the old format. When you changed the format I lost my weekly trains news wire. had to call to get my email reinstated. Since then, I dislike the changes ( I miss the daily posts for the whole week of news of interest ). The new format only has 2 or 3 stories labeled Thursday and Friday. Where are the news items for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday??????

  3. Still not getting NICTDs West Lake Project. Where are ridership numbers? Has a bus program even been tried along this route? Ya just don’t build heavy commuter rail, used only in rush hour, with NO idea IF ya can get Hoosiers to ride it.

  4. This morning the Milwaukee newspaper describes the proposal which consists of a bus line on a city street with a few minor upgrades. Prior to the current health emergency, ridership on the Milwaukee County Transit System – 100% buses – was dropping like a stone.
