Atlas HO and N scale ACF Coalveyor bathtub gondolas
Building a unit coal train in HO and N scales is much easier thanks to Atlas’ release of ready-to-run models of American Car & Foundry (ACF) Coalveyor bathtub gondolas. These dimensionally accurate cars come neatly decorated in authentic color schemes with a dozen individual road numbers each. ACF began building the lightweight Coalveyor bathtub gondolas in the late 1970s. They have a reinforced bottom bay, which adds more cubic capacity to each car, and a rotary coupler on one end so they can be rotary dumped without uncoupling.
Both the HO and N scale Atlas Coalveyors are well done models. I was very impressed with the smooth paint application and crisp lettering that’s enhanced by the sharpness of the color separation line on the rotary end. The end-mounted brake detail is nicely done, and the accurately modeled interiors with internal bracing are nice touches that allow modelers to run loaded or empty unit coal trains.
