Once again, my local hobby shop proves to be a great place. I was buying a Bachmann CSX YN3 GP30 and a Conrail Geep as well. The CSX was going to a friend for his upcoming birthday. I’ve got nothing against Bachmann. Three out of seven operating units on my small fictitious Huntley Freight Division of Conrail are Bachmann, the third being the Dash.

I bought it with the Geep and, once home, put it on the layout. It ran like a dream. It actually ran better than my Athearn SD40-2 I got second-hand from another friend, which runs really slow, but runs well.

The Dash has enough pull to haul 15 free rolling boxcars, including a heavyweight boxcar. While still second hand and all, the fact that it still had the original box, it looks amazing, and was a complete shock to me.

If you want a tough locomotive that’s built to last and look good doing so, the Spectrum Dash 8-40C is the best option in my book.

The MRSP is $140.
