I enjoyed watching the video of this is a beautifully crafted model railroad, which I have been fortunate to see in person.
The Shay locomotive in the video is a Bachmann modified to represent Stimson Timber Co. # 2 that was converted from a wood burner. They removed the wood bunker and replaced it with this unusual round fuel tank. On my model it is used to hold the speaker for the TCS Wow sound decoder.
Oil fired engines are less likely to throw sparks than wood fired engines, and burning the timber land is not a good idea for logging railroads.

Oil fired engines did not blast burning embers up and out the stack into the woods.
Gotta say that is a cool looking railroad

Oil-fired locomotives do not create as many exhaust sparks as coal-fired, or especially wood-fired. Much of the Pacific North West has a dry climate. Despite a well-deserved reputation for rainy weather on the western slopes of the Cascades, often droughts cause late summers to be extremely dry. The Great Fire of 1910 killed 87 people and burned acreage the size of 4 Rhode Islands. Many railroads needed fire lookouts after trains passed, and many used fire-fighting water tank cars.
Were the “logs” cut from real tree branches? They looked authentic to me. Excellent detailing! Thank you.
Why would you need a fuel/oil fired locomotive in a logging operation
