Model railroader Rick Stern built a 30 x 48-foot freelanced HO scale model train layout that’s inspired by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Ry. and a Southern California setting. Rick models the steam-to-diesel transition era so there’s plenty of steam- and diesel-led trains running on the model railroad. Check out these video highlights showing model trains running through several of the detailed scenes.

  1. I love anything Santa Fe, this is a nicely done layout. I’d be happy with this in my home (:

  2. Really nice video thank you for this. I wanted to know what model manufacturer the doodle bug made. I am trying to kit bash it since years but it is less easy then it looks. The original is parked in Belen New Mexico. I love that model

  3. such inspiration Rick. I'm currently designing my first ever big layout and you've definitely motivated my. terrific layout. thanks rick,

  4. Robert C the tail car is correct, the Santa Fe and EsPee modified tail cars for coach/lounge service. Santa Fe and NYO&W had coach/light meal service tail cars also. The CB&Q had tail cars built as lounge/light meal service, the tail car of the Kato N scale Silver streak is a model of the cars. The extensions on the beet racks were to increase volume to match weight capacity. The only thing missing was smoke units in the PA's. There is a picture of an LA motorcycle cop writing a ticket to a Santa Fe engineer, according to the caption, a smoKe ticket from a PA. I seem to recall Kalbach has the picture in their archives. It appeared in MR c couple of decades ago.

  5. Enjoyed the whole show but those AC cab forwards with the sugar beet special was really cool! Nice work, Rick!

  6. Very nicely done. Thought it interesting that the motor-car was using a modern tail car as a trailer. Your SP "beet racks" look more like "chip racks" as they have the straight side extensions.

  7. Really nice layout. A nice blend of great scenery, very nice models and good video photography. That layout is something to be proud of!
