Larry Hickman’s HO scale River Falls & Eastern Ry. is a freelanced model railroad set in West Virginia from 1959 to 1960. The layout is inspired by the Baltimore & Ohio, Western Maryland, and New York Central. Watch this video tour of trains rolling through the detailed Appalachian scenery.

  1. Did you guys see that Ann Arbor Railroad wooden boxcar at the end in the siding. It’s a short line in my local area.

  2. Nice. I sincerely appreciate the lack of onboard speakers, which to me never come close to replicating real-life experience. The quiet music was just the right touch. I especially liked the low-angle lighting in the initial frames, mimicking morning sunlight; the far-away shots that give us a chance to see everything; and the interesting variety of weathering on rolling stock. Really nice!

  3. Larry has a well built and operating layout. His op sessions are fun to attend. Larry is always willing to help people learn how the prototype operations can be used on the model railroad. Between Larry and several retired and current railroaders there is lots of knowledge. More video on you tube.

  4. Thank you. An inspirational layout! Adding a little narration would only enhance the viewing.

  5. Great modeling and a great effort to get the look of the eastern hills. Is it just me, or is the camera compressing things from left and right? The trains and buildings look narrower than normal.

  6. Very nicely done. Scenery, trackwork and trains all played off of each other. I just keep saying someday, someday.

  7. Nice video. I grew up in West Virginia during that time period. I would like to see more. It seemed that I saw a small portion of a much larger layout.

  8. Nice layout. It would have been better with sound other than the music. Also liked your track work and structures.

  9. Thoroughly enjoyed this video in spite of the distortion that made the equipment look taller and narrower than normal. I thought it might be my large monitor and full screen but it was still distorted when I dropped back to normal viewing.

    Beautiful railroad, Larry.

  10. Wonderful layout! I wonder why the video seems to be narrowed down on the horizontal, the trains seem narrower left to right than reality?

  11. Nice layout. Fun to look at what railroading was like in the 50s. Most of the names on the cars are fallen flags.
