Mike Havens’ HO scale model railroad is set along the New York Central System through Illinois and Indiana. Don’t miss the full story of Mike’s model train layout in the October 2016 Model Railroader.
This online bonus video follows a coal train through a town along the midwestern main line.

  1. I really enjoyed seeing this video, especially of the same line that once went thru the Town I currently reside in, Shelbyville, IL. Mike did an outstanding job re-creating what once was. Just kind of disappointed he didn’t add the 2 story Outhouse that is in Gays. Other than that, Outstanding Job!

  2. ABA F units: No horn sounded for the grade crossing? It sounded as if the lead A unit had sound but the trailing B an A units did not. Were they being operated “dead in tow”? Thanks – Pete.

  3. I really liked the overview of the entire layout. Close ups are great for showing details of the modelers skills, but it is still really great to see the entire layout.

  4. I’ll add my kudos to those of everyone else. I like little touches of realism like the mix of paint schemes on the Fs, which frames the era nicely. To answer Kevin’s question, NYC reporting marks reappeared in the not-so-distant past and I’m sure are still out there. They were used by CSX, I believe to identify former Conrail equipment coming into the CSX fold.

  5. Didn’t hear the horns at the grade crossing. Hey I liked that white fir truck about 45 seconds and a minute in. How about a better view. And Yes Kevin the NYC (and PRR) like the Lone Ranger ride again. When CSX and NS divided up Conrail they basically unmerged the Penn(iless) Central and used the old reporting marks on the freight equipment to show who owned what.

  6. What’s not to love about this layout? got F units on the point, a super string of loaded coal hoppers, nicely done. I may be getting old and not seeing as well, but I swear I saw a NYC (reporting marks) on a hopper car come through Savannah two days ago? anyone know if NYC is active in some other form? scac?

  7. Very nice layout. The area being modeled isn’t far from where I live and the NYC used to come through here as well. Great job, Mike!

  8. I particularly enjoyed the slow-pan overview of the entire layout and room at the end which is a feature missing from many layout videos.

  9. Very nice. Streets look real, main line track looks like it should, passing/sidings, lots more to discover. Feels like coming home for the holidays! Great layout.

  10. Job well done. Detailed and use of space looked great. Wanted to see the whole run in lieu of what looked like Main St. Keep on sharing with us; I like your attention to detail with mechanical items doing what are suppose to. The lights on the caboose flashing alternately was a great EOT device too.
